Just saving this post for the reference for future aspirants. One can read the comments made by the IITR professor justifying 0.33. Had I given GATE and suffered this I would have gone to court against this stupidity.

Long back Bikram Ballav suggested me to write about my Ph.D. experience which I'm yet to complete. But after seeing the information level of the GATE takers I'm forced to share everything I know about Ph.D. and clear many misconceptions. So, why should one do a Ph.D.?

  1. Because I'm mad - yes, those who do Ph.D. are mad people.
  2. No other option. I did not get a good job.
  3. I want to become a Professor.

Not sure of any more reasons but these are the common ones. Now, what one does during a Ph.D.?

  1. Do TA work
  2. Read 1000s of research papers and behave like Einstein
  3. Publish papers to journals and do no coding
  4. Struggle to get a gf/bf as no one wants a Ph.D.
  5. Struggle for money while your friends earn plenty

Now, after having seen Ph.D. life in IISc., India, INRIA France, and OSU United States, I can say something.

  1. Ph.D life is so different at good places like IITs compared to other Universities.
  2. As a Ph.D. one is expected to work on one or more problems in some specific area. So, after finishing Ph.D. you become an expert in that field and any company working in that field should be happy to hire you. Yes, Ph.Ds from good places are hired at very good salary by Tech. companies.
  3. Ph.Ds are not expected to code. But based on your project you will be required to implement something and that requires coding. During my Ph.D, I had done less coding than my Masters as for research more time is spend for analyzing stuffs.
  4. Me and many of my batch mates got married during Ph.D. But this might be hard in India or US as Ph.D. life is more hectic there.
  5. Ph.Ds are paid okay. In India it pays better than a starting IT job whereas in France and US, it pays way better. One advantage of Ph.D. abroad is for 2 years there is no need to pay income tax.
  6. Ph.Ds are not publishing bogus papers. That happens at low tier universities. At good places they struggle to get paper published at top notch conferences where the papers are reviewed by experts from the best Universities, industries like Google, Intel, Microsoft etc. And that is the value of top conferences, citations etc. No good Professor/researcher will like to have his/her name on a bogus paper.

Now, can I do Ph.D.?

I want to do what someone tells and lead a happy life earning salary they give

I want to do what I like and give my contribution to the world however small that might be

If you think like first- no, you should never consider Ph.D. If you think like second yes, you can do Ph.D. There is no super skills required for this. You get enough time, but you should spend it in useful ways. Anyone who has prepared by self and got to top 1000 rank is qualified to do a Ph.D. - because it requires self work and guidance as Professor can only guide you, since you are doing a new work he can only solve troubles you have. Most of the problem solving path, must be found by the candidate himself. Those who ask for questions like "what is an automata" are not fit for Ph.D. As a Ph.D. candidate you are not expected to know everything -- you can happily say "I do not know to anything you do not know", but you must be willing to learn anything that is required.

Who are preferred by IISc/IIT professors?

Most of them know about Indian education system. So, never try to fool them. They want to take those students who will do good work under them. Some prefer disciplined students who put lot of effort in their work - usually who tops university exams, some prefer those who have good basics - who can answer GATE level questions, some prefer those who have in depth knowledge in their areas of research etc. Also, those who have done some good work either in terms of publications, or coding projects are also preferred.

hello everyone ,I need some data for a project i am working on as a part of my course Human centered Computing at CSE IITK,

Data will remain anonymous.

whole process will not take more than 15-20 minutes.

1. Install "Call Log Export" from play store (app link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dukemdev&hl=en
Export the file to your drive folder or email yourself, download the file callLog.csv in a folder

You can anonymise the numbers by using python script that i have attached(hide_numbers.py)
place callLog.csv and hide_numbers.py in any folder and run :python hide_numbers.py or python3 hide_numbers.py
This will generate newcallLog.csv which contains id0,id1 in place of phonenumbers.
you can also directly give callLog.csv and i will run anonymising script at my system.

hide_numbers. py download from :https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4BnAxag2J3SSVYtQnMyNDRuUFk/view?usp=drivesdk

2.Install "AppList" from play store (app link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dwak.applist&hl=en)
open app, at top right corner select option 'Export all data as JSON' save to a file or google drive folder.
It will be saved as applist.json.

3.give a Personality Test(10 minutes) at https://www.truity.com/test/big-five-personality-test
at the end select No thanks, just show my result
create a text file scores.txt containing
scores from test:

O:
C:
E:
A:
N:

and your gender:

3.Add newcallLog.csv, applist.json and scores.txt to a folder, name folder with your name (or any other fictional name if you want to stay anonymous eg ninja01) and add it to the drive folder that we have shared.

It was so wonderful to see so many toppers thanking GO in their responses. Last year there were not much activity on the site other than the tests organized by Bikram Ballav and usual Q/A. Still, the no. of top rankers are much higher than any previous year. This is personally so satisfying for me because when I was free last year, I had two options -- to spend time answering personal queries or to make the site stable, add features and fix the issues. I took the second one and is happy to know that it was the right move.

In terms of the result, all toppers are getting what they deserve. Unlike in coaching, here no one is giving any short cut or tricks for success and those who work smartly and correctly understand the concepts become toppers because they truly deserve it. Many of those who thanked me personally -- I have not even talked to them once. This is the message I want to give to any new aspirant. If you are really brilliant you can get GATE without doing anything. Otherwise instead of looking for shortcuts, try to improve yourself and become worthy of getting to IITs. Then you will surely get there. You should also develop critical reasoning -- not behave like going and giving 1* rating for something someone ALLEGEDLY said -- instead questioning why/how for anything anyone says - even your teacher. That is how you can understand concepts correctly and become a good problem solver.

I do not like to say this as an achievement but GO keys were 100% accurate this time and was the same last time. Well, this should be so trivial for any keys as the keys are not made inside the exam hall in 3 hours. But unfortunate thing in India is no one really cares for making their keys accurate. I guess Made Easy keys were the best among others and even it was not 90% accurate. Keys wont affect your performance, but what I meant is the authenticity of their materials. If you go over them, you are already reducing a good percentage of your marks -- starting with 90% instead of 100%. Learning wrong stuffs and correcting later is more difficult than learning correct stuffs. This might be the reason why people from ECE and Mech. are topping GATE in CSE.

I'll make a separate post regarding how to prepare adding more points based on how GATE 2017 went. But in short YOU have to solve problem in GATE and must prepare for it. Like in cricket a batsman has to hit the ball- sweep shot, reverse sweep etc. are all useful additions but unless you know how to hit the ball nothing else matter. So, prepare for the basics and then do add on. And GATE syllabus, standard books, and previous year questions are your best guide - not any human including me.

I am writng this on behalf of my friend. Any suggestion or advice will be very helpful. Please be kind do not bash.

My friend is 29 year old. He will turn 30 in few months. He was working in very good company but had to leave it due to some family problem.( In total he has a work exp of 2 yrs).Last year mid aug he started to look for job but he didnt got any due to so much gap.(3 yrs gap). I advised him to write gate he appeared for GATE to get into some psus and with 3-4 months of prep he was able to get a decent rank. around 800. Now he want to write gate again next year but with a job( He thinks he may get bsnl jto this time) or by taking admission in some lower nit( he is not intrested in doing mtech his prioirty is to get into some psu.) He belongs to OBC NCL so he will be able to fill form of most of psus.

He is confuse whether he whould prepare for gate or not, or continue looking for job. Will his gap in job will create problem in psu interviews or iit placement interviews? Is it worth to try one more year for gate or should he continue looking for job which is very difficult for him to get now?

Hello friends !! Good morning to you all..I know being an aspirant like you all the post that I am going to write should be in view of as much aspirants as possible..Although myself not getting that good rank this year , but still I want to forget the day as soon as possible..

The matter about which I am discussing now is regarding counselling based on my previous year experience..I am writing this at this juncture because many have started filling the forms..

So last year IIT KGP and IIT G did not have spot round for admission..So seat filling is not assured in all IITs..Thats why some suggestions from my side :

a) Those who are getting rank around 50-60 should not apply for IIT K , IIT M and IIT D as they will get IISC Bengaluru / IIT B easily(If not in 1st round , then in 2nd round or 3rd round)..

b) Now IIT M,IIT K and IIT D are similar..So it is not suggested to fill in all of these..If one's rank is around 120-130 , one would get IIT KGP in worst case easily n even IIT M..So in this scenario if one's preference is IIT M , then please do not apply for IIT K/IIT D or vice versa..

c) Thirdly if one gets say around 160 - 170 rank , then he / she would get IIT KGP conveniently..So plz do not apply for IIT G/IIT R/IIT H..If I remember properly only 1-2 student out of 23 students in general category took admission in IIT G finally who were given seats in the first round of counseling..So in other words , the entire round was a waste..So my point is if someone's preference is IIT R , then please do not apply for IIT G or vice versa (Myself was a victim of this ; could have got a seat in IIT G last yr only else)..

I have written this keeping in view of the prevalent counseling system..So if the system does not get bettered , and if at least we become a bit responsible then also the scenario gets bettered to good extent for many..

And I would have written this post if I were get the top rank this year as well which is not going to happen for me this year as opposed to my dreams..But anyways as a piece of suggestion I have written it.I can only suggest and not force anyone..So it is my heartful request to look into this and also no one should take it personally( I mean those who are getting good ranks )..

Thank you all..

Hello,

I just wanted to know that when IIT R will release revised answer key after accepting challenges from students?

Will there be any changes in CS GATE 2017 answer key(Set 1 and Set 2)?

After how many days  IISc(GATE 2016 organiser) had uploaded revised answer key for GATE 2016? Was there any change?

Sign the petition please....

https://www.change.org/p/bharat-sanchar-nigam-limited-unfair-to-freshers-engineering-candidates?recruiter=false&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink

Respected Sir/Ma’am,
With due respect, this is to bring your kind attention to the issue regarding recruitment in BSNL for 2,510 posts of Junior Telecom Officer (JTO). The company issued the initial advertisement with No. - 12-2/2016-Rectt. in the month of September 2016 stating that the candidates having qualification BE/B.Tech. or equivalent in Telecom/Electronics/Radio/Computer/Electrical/Information Technology/Instrumentation Engg. or M.Sc (Electronics)/M.Sc (Computer Science) are required to appear GATE exam 2017, opting one paper from selected four disciplines of GATE paper codes i.e. CS & IT/ EC/ EE/& IN. It was nowhere mentioned in the advertisement that the final year students who are pursuing the qualifying degree aren’t eligible to apply for the same. Neither was it mentioned that only those candidates who have completed the qualifying degree in or before 2016 are eligible for the above mentioned vacancies.

Later, in the month of March 2017, BSNL announced that it’ll be starting taking the online applications from 6th March, 2017. Again in the six paged advertisement that it released, there was no mention of non-eligibility of final year students. But to our surprise, when we started filling the online application form we came to know that, in the qualification section, there was no option of filling the year of qualifying degree as 2017. It was then that we came to know that we are not eligible for applying for the said vacancies.

This is unfair to us in that the company must have clearly mentioned in its very first advertisement that it won’t allow the final year students during the recruitment. This is not at all a question of some ambiguity or misunderstanding on our part because if the company would have clearly mentioned in its initial notification only about its eligibility criteria then we wouldn’t had our hopes high for the BSNL recruitments for the post of JTO.

With such a bias, the company may be even losing some of the very potential candidates just because they will be completing the qualifying degree in 2017.

Hoping that you would understand our concerns regarding this.

Final year students

Thank you Gate Overflow team.
I prepared for my gate exam without joining any coaching only because of you. This site has helped me a lot.
I did not perform good in gate exam as I am expecting only 40.35 marks. When I analyze I got various reasons for this. Only 10 months before i decided to go for higher studies and started preparation for gate. As I am from an average college so my background was not so good. It took me long to buildup my basic concepts. I found this website just 4-5 months ago. And I was not familiar with this website as I was using this site only for solving some problems of previous years question. I was not aware about various things such as mock Go test etc.
Because of lack of experience of appearing in online test my time management was very bad and i did not complete reading/attempting all the questions even once. And due to this i loose 8-10 marks. There were questions on which I spent up to 20 minutes, my bad.

Now I am looking forward for gate 2018.
So please guide me in the following situation:

My aim is clear that is of higher studies from a reputed college and for that I will appear in gate 2018 for sure. But the question is "Should I take admission in M. Tech in 2017 or not?"

I asked this question because my financial condition is not good and i wanted to take admission so that i will get stipend, but someone told me "If you leave the M. Tech course in between then you will have to return all the stipend you get during that period otherwise you will be blacklisted by IITs." So please confirm me if this is true?

Also guide me if it is true then what should I do now? whether to take admission and continuing preparation or do preparation at home? Because ultimately I want IITs for my M. Tech. I cannot join any coaching.
Thank you.
