I am currently in my 3rd year and I gave GATE thorough EE. I wish to pursue Mtech in AI from IISC. If I get a good score/rank this is year will I be called for interview/written test process by IISc?

If not can I apply in 2023 through my gate score of 2022?

@UtkarshPathak

 I have relevant par on admission to MTech AI …

Discipline: Artificial Intelligence (AI) ...

Department/Centre/Unit:

Jointly conducted by Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Automation, Electrical Communica-tion Engg, Electronic Systems Engg...

Intake: 40 ..

Qualification with required GATE paper (in brackets):

BE/ B Tech or equivalent degree (with a GATE Paper in CS, EE, EC). Candidates should have done a formal course in programming in C and C++....

Selection Process:

Selection is based on 70% of GATE score + 30% written test and interview ...

Areas of study:

Digital Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision, Graphics, Stochastic Systems, Multimedia, Real Time and Fault Tolerant Systems, Sensor Networks, E Commerce, Speech Processing, Real Time Signal Processing and Embedded Systems....

They ask for choice of subject. People generally choose one of :

 ## LA , Probability ,Algorithms ...

If you choose a harder topic than these note that the questions get exponentially harder. For example, what you might have thought you know about Markov Chains would be quite a bit less advanced than what the professor would know. Thus if you choose a harder subject it’s easy to get tripped up....

@UtkarshPathak

I have known the people working for IISc, and they do not know more than GATE-CSE syllabus, which you have already mastered to be able to attend this interview....

On a serious note, M. Tech (AI) programme is being introduced for the first time starting this year...

Considering this, I feel the interviews were set in a way to test the fundamental knowledge required for learning AI and nothing else...

They want to test whether the candidate has a basic understanding of programming, mathematics (read Linear Algebra and Probability) and statistics....

Coming to my personal interview experience, I would say it was fun as well as an eye-opener for me...

I was very confident going into the interview given my good performance in GATE exam, but soon realized that I am well below par of people here and have much to learn...

The interview started directly by one panel member pointing to one of the question in the test paper (which was written by me a day before to get selected for the interview) and asking why I was not able to solve it...

It was a multi-variate probability question. I said I had not prepared this topic and didn't have time to attempt something that I was not sure to solve....

Another panel member then said that you will have enough time here and asked me to attempt it on the whiteboard…

I tried and was able to solve it with one hint from them along the way. What I am trying to drive here is that it will feel more like a discussion and brainstorming session rather than an interview....

Rest of the interview was pretty straightforward with questions like:

1. What is rank of a matrix?

2. What do you mean by linearly dependent vectors?

3. Why is the column rank same as the row rank?

4. Write pseudo code for any sorting algorithm. (I wrote merge sort)...

Overall, I feel it was a brilliant experience to be humbled by some of the best minds in India. Nothing lost, plenty gained...

Yes, you can apply with your GATE 2022 score next year for admissions. I don’t think you need to apply anywhere this year.
