Hi, since there was no posts on today's exam I thought I'll create one. I felt it was moderate to difficult and lengthy. What about you guys, how did it go ? Some questions were really easy but I felt if I had more time I could have solved them. Questions from COA were really really easy and some questions from algo and DL took time. I made some obvious silly mistakes because of the time constraints I had. My first mistake was jumping right into technical and saving not enough time for aptitude section. There were 12-15 MSQs . I think I might give GATE again next year with ample practice (which I didn't) I also took coaching from a pretty famous guy who sold himself and his channel recently.( which was a waste of my money and time. Some might have benefited but I honestly didn't. I found out about GO after I bought the course. This is my honest view and I'm just trying to create awareness amongst others and not trying to create conflicts.) Believe me GO is more than enough for anyone out there preparing for GATE. (Thanks @arjun sir and GO team)
P.S I had only 2 months to prepare for GATE. All the best for next year guys .

Ya, GO is enough if we use it properly. It had been a  great help in my self-preparation.

The exam was definitely scoring. And I agree with what you have to say about the exam being lengthy.  I left 4-5 questions which I would have solved if time had not been a problem and god knows how many silly mistakes i have done. Deciphering all the options of MSQs was also a headache to me.

But as they say, there will always be problems. And nobody said that GATE is an easy exam.

Honestly saying GO helped me a lot

I am nothing without GO.

It is like an addiction to come to go daily and solve previous year questions.

Arjun sir, number of literals question came from your test series.

Question on pure aloha was from test series

Thanks sir.
I am happy. :)

Thanks

One of the main advantage of GO is each doubt which arise is already asked by some student and also related discussion will be there.

Thanks for GO, CSE Doubts, Arjun Sir, Shaik Masthan, zxy123 and all other aspirants.

My paper was set 2 (afternoon session) and I messed it up big time. Even the chances to clear the cut off look bleak. But yes the paper was definitely moderate to difficult and damn lengthy especially DLD and DS.

I also took coaching from the same guy which was the biggest mistake to start with. Did not understand even a single lecture taught by him on COA because of which I had to leave that subject entirely. And as luck would have it, some of the easiest questions were asked from COA.

PGEE and BITS HD are my only hopes now, taking a drop is not an option as I have 2 year exp in IT and resigned in October.

I didn't find the gate exam lengthy or difficult (afternoon session), I had done nearly 40-50 full length and actual gate was much easier than all of them.

Hopefully I score well.

@kalin you are mentioning me with giants of the website, lol.

But I would like to stay active despite my result here, this site is just awesome.

Unpopular opinion: Session 1 was easy and scoring, given you had enough time. The chance of making silly mistakes in the given 3 hours was HUGE, especially in MSQs. The questions were easy once you understood what was being asked, but about half the paper was not exactly direct in terms of language. Exhibit A: The question on BST.

@susmit600 but that is helpful to people who prepared, if it was not the case how would people get filtered.

@zxy123 I completely agree. My point is, paper 1 wasn't as easy and paper 2 wasn't as tough as they are each hyped to be (especially in the videos from various academies, forums etc).

I was in Session 2..and I think I messed up exam.....Trying to solve time consuming questions......i left midway and

got me trouble in the end ..Not having time to even  read questions which i could have done.... :-(

All the efforts of year gone in vain in just an 3 hours and few bad judgments.......

But Gate overflow was great help!!

I learned that it  does not matter if  know everything or not but to 'Solve'  few things accurately with speed under pressure.

I agree with you too on that, I gave the test yesterday too, in both morning and afternoon session and I think the hype is because of a non-serious/under-prepared crowd.

I really felt GATE is not taken as seriously as other standard tests like JEE.

@rupesh17 remember only relative performance matter, everyone made mistakes :)

The fact you've prepared really put you ahead of 90% I feel.

Guys any suggestion how to use scribble pad properly i have an atrocious handwriting and write everything as large as possible to compensate for that and i run out of space this Gate exam faster than I expected.I didn't face this issue during many mock tests i gave as i was using a4 loose sheets except for the two mocks i did with actual scribble pad this problem went unnoticed due to the paper being not lengthy.

Can anyone give an estimae of what should be the approximated marks in GATE 2021, slot 1 for getting a rank under 300?

I guess it will be in between 60 to 65.  Normalization may play significant role (as set-II is bit tougher than I).

A lot of noise has been made regarding paper 2. But personally, I don't think it was that much difficult. It was a bit lengthy, but not that much difficult. Even if it was difficult the guys in the tough shift will be compensated in a very generous manner by the god known as Normalization. Normalization tends to favor tough shift candidates a lot.

Time and again previous years' toppers have said that one should not cling to the scores of test series and get habituated with any test series. Who so ever has done that is bound to suffer.

@HeartBleed True. Set 2 can be put in the category of : not as tough as 2018 or 2006, not as easy as 2019 and 2008.

Please start uploading the question also.

Just ask for another scribble pad @marlon, aside from that mental calculations might help

Question - 1

Consider pipelined processor with 5 stages IF, ID, EX, MEM ACCESS, WB. Each stage
of pipeline, except EX stage, takes 1 cycle.
Assume that ID stage merely decodes the Instruction and the register read is performed in EX stage.
The EX stage takes 1 cycle for ADD Instruction and 2 cycles for MUL Instruction.
Ignore pipeline register  latencies.
Consider the following sequence of 8 Instruction ADD, MUL, ADD, MUL, ADD, MUL, ADD, MUL.
Assume that every MUL Instruction is data dependent on ADD Instruction just before it and every ADD Instruction (except first ADD) is data dependent on MUL Instruction just before it.

I don't want to comment about paper 1 because everything seems to be easy as long as one doesn't attempt it. But ya Paper 2 was Damn tough and that is for sure. The shuffling of 1 mark and 2 mark questions makes the paper even more complicated.Though there were several easy questions but it was difficult to judge as the paper was shuffled and lengthy too. Rest I hope normalization will help a bit.
Like
@Shubham Das So true! Some of the questions from Set 2 were so easy that I had to read the question several times to make sure I haven't misinterpreted the questions :P

But some of the questions were up there with the type of questions asked in 2018 and 2006. Really difficult to comprehend what was being asked, lengthy solutions and MSQs were a huge overhead.

I given afternoon section paper.

I feel that question paper was lengthy and difficulty was more on moderate to difficult. Most of the questions required little bit more time than the average. I believe that people who practiced more questions will have good advantage, so I think  repeaters may have good scoring chances.

My paper went terribly. I didn't handled the shuffled questions well and sucked at managing time. So not expecting much from the results.

Can I have any hopes if Im scoring around 50-53 in afternoon slot?
Like
Coming to the afternoon slot. It was not difficult. The msqs, jumbled order and the size of questions makes it look difficult. There are many questions whose length occupied more than half of my screen. Reading them itself took 3-4 minutes. Lets hope normalization does it best for afternoon slot guys

I was in set 1 and felt paper was a little lengthy just because of the MSQ's .i saw set 2 analysis also, it was moderate and not that tough as some people are saying,  questions were doable but yes, 100% agree  that paper for set 2 was very very lengthy. But people are comparing it with 2006 paper and that's really wrong. Anyone who has practiced gate ques from 2006 knows that how tough 2006 gate paper questions were.

I personally feel set 2 was tougher overall than set 1 but not to the extent these online discussions are talking about.

 Lets hope for the best:)

No it's not tough as 2006 definitely. It is more of 2013 type. And specially the shuffling of the questions has made it even more problematic as 1 mark and 2 mark questions are appearing randomly. One is no idea which one to choose and which one to do later. Even if they would have given the questions sequentially then also it could be bit easy for students to solve strategically.
Like
@Shubham yes and the MSQ's also consumed time.

Hi guyz, I have few doubts(asking these since I am a fresher with respect to Gate):

1) Can someone tell me , when can we expect the tentative answer key ?

will they release after 2 weeks of exam like that ?

2)will our response sheet come before result or during the final answer key release ?

3) I came to know in Gate 2020, final answer key & result were both released on the same day.

Is this the scenario in other previous years too Or they usually release both of them in separate dates ?

Thanks in advance

@MohanK The official answer key will release on 18th Feb most probably. After that IIT gives a chance to students to challenge solution if there is any mistake. After that IIT rechecks it , if they feel the solution is really wrong or ambiguous then they change it accordingly. If any question is wrongly framed they give marks to all candidates. After all these things the final scores are calculated and results are declared. Hope it helped.
