IIITA M. Tech IT review

Note:- this is the personal view we are around 10 people (12% of batch) are writing this  it may differ for other people. Due to personal reason we cannot share correct names. We are IIITA M.Tech students.

if you want just Summary here it is:

In short if you want to take admission in a college where is less work load and corruption free environment then do not consider iiita. believe us in 100 students batch only max to max 10% student are  satisfied with college. Don’t join here only seeing the ctc on the sites. If u have any doubt u can search any m.tech student of iiita on linkedin and talk them they will clear you but talks atleast 2-3 people and talk to only those who have attended offline classes (2024 batch ).

For student who have non cs background if you know good coding then you can only survive here. If you don’t know then you will face lots of difficulty.

we are writing  this because most of us  in our batch have taken admission just looking placement on sites but after coming here the story was different so we want to make sure that you know the truth. If you  dont know coding then your placement will be very bad even you  may end up with unplaced also so take only admission if you know good coding because there is lots of competition because this a IT college here are 800+ student  who will sit ony for IT companies. And for M.tech there will be very less opportunity compare to b.tech.

so take admission with proper research.

1.Admissions:  Admission to the M.Tech IT program is based on the CCMT (Centralized Counseling for M.Tech) and the scores required vary from 500 to 600 for the general category. There are three main specializations available:

(i) M.Tech in IT Systems: For this specialization, any valid GATE score is accepted, including scores from disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineering. After the first semester, you will have the opportunity to choose from three specializations on the basis of your first semester marks: a. MLIS (Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems) b. HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) c. RMI (Robotics and Machine Intelligence)

(ii) MNS (M.Tech in Network Security): Only GATE CS (Computer Science) students are eligible for this specialization. After the first semester, you will have the opportunity to choose from three specializations on the basis of your first semester marks: a. CLIS (Cyber Law and Information Security) b. WCC (Wireless Communication and Computing)

(iii) MSD (M.Tech in Data): This specialization is exclusively for CS (Computer Science) students. After the first semester, you will have the opportunity to choose from three specializations on the basis of your first semester marks: a. SE (Software Engineering) b. DE (Data Engineering)

NOTE: the student who fails in any subject they will be admitted in robotics in IT System (less good branch). And DATA ENGG for MSD. And in WCC in MNS branch. These are less preferred branch if you are getting less CGPA or failing in any subject then high chance is you will get any of these branch.

2. Fees Structure (for Batch 2022): The fees for the M.Tech program for Batch 2022 was set at Rs. 463,000, which covers hostel and mess charges for the entire duration of the course. It's important to note that the fees increase by 10% each year, so there may be a higher fee structure for the current year. It is worth mentioning that the fees for IIITA are relatively higher compared to other colleges, such as NITs (National Institutes of Technology).

3. Campus: The campus facilities are considered to be satisfactory. However, there have been some concerns regarding the condition of the hostels. It has been noted that the hostel conditions are not up to the expected standards, and the quality of food provided is reported to be poor. One positive aspect of the hostels is the freedom to go out at any time, as there are no restrictions imposed on the students. During the first year, students are typically accommodated in double occupancy rooms. It is unfortunate that some hostel bathrooms are reported to be in a substandard condition, resembling those found in railway stations.

4. After admission, the real story of IIITA M.Tech begins. In the first semester, you will have four subjects and one subject called PP (Programming Practice), which is common for all students. Survival in this subject depends solely on your coding skills. The exams start in the first week and continue until the end of the semester. If you are a proficient coder, you will not face any issues with the marks but will experience mental torment. On the other hand, if you lack coding knowledge, your life will become a living hell. But starting from scratch makes it incredibly difficult. Only a few individuals manage to survive.

In the 2022 session, approximately 18% of students failed in this subject. And they may face problem in placement because in this college they don’t allow to clear back until the same next year semester.

5.Management: This college is known for having one of the worst management systems in the entire country. In cases where students fail in the PP subject, the college management does not allow them to attend the course during the summer. Instead, they are required to pass the subject in the third semester, following the same requirements such as maintaining over 75% attendance, and so on.

The faculty in this college tends to form groups, leading to rivalries among them. Unfortunately, this often results in a lack of concern for the students, as most academic decisions are made by the DPGC (Department Postgraduate Committee). The DPGC consists of faculty members who engage in politics, with one group supporting the students while another opposes them. Ultimately, this leads to no productive outcome for the students.

The college's status as a deemed university allows the teachers to have supreme authority. They can make decisions without accountability, including the ability to fail students without recourse. Unfortunately, due to the lack of effective management, students find themselves helpless in such situations.

6.Coursework: The coursework in this college is incredibly hectic, to say the least. The teachers are not proactive in teaching, leaving students to study on their own. Additionally, there are a few faculty members who only teach for a total of three hours throughout the entire semester but require students to take exams that last over 60 hours, including lab exams.

Even during the lab exams, the timing is often scheduled from 3 PM to 5 PM, but students may end up staying until midnight. The lack of consideration and disregard for student well-being is evident, as they are subjected to such torment. It becomes challenging to find any sense of mental peace in this environment.

7. TA (Teaching Assistantship): In this college it seem like M.Tech students are primarily offered  admission only for doing TA , which often result in being treated more like workers than students. The responsibility of teaching falls on the TAs, as the teachers do very little for the B.Tech students (in most cases, TAs are assigned to B.Tech students). TAs are expected to conduct tutorials, oversee labs, administer exams, and even evaluate answer copies. The workload is quite heavy, especially considering the limited number of teachers in the college (approximately 38 faculty members), resulting in a high student-to-teacher ratio (around 70%, whereas it should ideally be 15-18%).

Furthermore, some teachers may even yell at TAs in front of first-year students, creating a hostile environment. TAs are required to sign in every day between 9 AM and 11 AM from the very first day. Despite the extensive responsibilities and dedication, fair stipend distribution is not guaranteed. Some students may face deductions in their stipend, with the excuse that they haven't signed or have taken leave. you can understand where all these money will go. Even during holidays, TAs are expected to perform their duties, with only seven days off after one semester and 15 days off during summers. On the remaining days, TAs are still required to visit the college for signing purposes.

8.Project Guide: After the completion of the first semester, you will be assigned a thesis guide. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of faculty members, and only a few of them are truly competent as guides. It is a matter of luck to be assigned one of these proficient guides, as there is a high probability that you will not get one.

The process of assigning a guide is often we referred as an AUCTION which adds to the challenges. You will be called in front of the teachers, and they will simply ask for your name before assigning you to a guide without any input or ability to influence the decision. Many students are facing significant problems as a result of this process. For instance, if you are pursuing data engineering, you may be assigned a guide who specializes in network and security, even though your field is software engineering. Consequently, you will be required to complete your entire thesis on a topic that may not align with your specialization. Unfortunately, once a guide is assigned, it cannot be changed. This issue has affected a large number of students in our batch.

Furthermore, there is a presence of politics among the teachers, leading to biased evaluation of project marks. Even if you put in extra effort and work diligently, if your guide is not favorable, it is unlikely that you will receive a GPA higher than 8. Conversely, if you are fortunate enough to have a good guide, you are more likely to achieve a GPA of 9.99. In our batch, a few individuals received a low GPA of 5.5 in their project despite their extensive efforts, while others who put in minimal effort received a GPA of 9 or above. This demonstrates clear bias in the evaluation process.

Additionally, there seems to be favoritism in terms of marks. As previously mentioned, TAs manage everything, and if you have a good relationship with a TA, you are more likely to receive favorable marks, even without substantial effort. Conversely, if you have done exceptional work but lack a good relationship with a TA, your marks may suffer as a result.

9.If you fail in any subject, you will encounter numerous difficulties because the college does not conduct any summer semester exams for students to improve their grades. This poses a significant problem, particularly during the placement process. In our batch, approximately 20% of students failed in certain subjects, but the college administration does not seem to be concerned about this issue. As a result, it can create obstacles and challenges when seeking employment opportunities.

10. Placement: The placement process in this college is marred by corruption, making it uncertain even if you put in significant effort to secure a good placement. The entire power lies in the hands of the Placement Coordinator (PC). If you have a good rapport with the PC, you may have a relatively smooth placement experience. However, if you lack that connection, you may find yourself struggling, witnessing others with lesser qualifications or knowledge being placed ahead of you. This can be disheartening and demoralizing.

Moreover, there are instances of unofficial offers being extended to the PC's friends, bypassing the college's policy of allowing only one offer per student. This favoritism leads to some individuals receiving multiple lucrative offers, while others are left with nothing. Unfortunately, the college administration turns a blind eye to these practices, further perpetuating the corruption. Complaining about such issues yields no results, as the management fails to take any action. This situation is worsened by the fact that the college supports such practices to inflate the overall placement package (CTC) numbers showcased on their website. However, they refrain from providing precise details with roll numbers to maintain transparency.

This lack of transparency and the presence of corruption in the placement process create an unfair and disappointing environment for students seeking employment opportunities. It undermines the efforts and hard work put in by deserving candidates and raises questions about the integrity of the placement system in the college.

Certainly, there are some positive aspects to consider as well. If you excel in coding and possess strong programming skills, there may be opportunities for you to succeed and secure good placements or opportunities to excel in your field. These opportunities could potentially outweigh the challenges and drawbacks mentioned earlier. It's important to assess your own strengths and interests before making a decision, taking into account both the positive and negative aspects of the college.

In summary, if you prioritize fair academics, a less hectic environment, and a college free from politics, it would be advisable to consider other options instead of IIITA. Additionally, for those who have taken the GATE exam in a non-CS field, if you possess strong coding skills, you may consider joining IIITA. However, if you lack coding proficiency, you will likely regret your decision to join the institute every single day.

PS: please don’t mind any grammatical error.

Hello everyone,
Many students are approaching me and my classmates regarding IIITA mtech admission as this year they introduced 3 new branches in MTech in IT as below.
1. Mtech IT in system
2. MTech IT in software and data engg.
3. MTech IT in network and security
So, i just want to clear that these are not new branches. They just grouped into 3.
Last year, in ccmt 2021 we had only MTech IT. And all 125 students were admitted into this single branch. After 1st semester we were divided into 7 branches based on our cgpa and preference as below.
1. Software engg (SE)
2. Data engg (DE)
3. Machine learning and intelligent systems (MLIS)
4. Human computer interaction (HCI)
5. Robotics
6. Cyber law and information security (CLIS)
7. Wireless communication (WCC)
This year in ccmt 2022 they had given 3 branches instead of one i mentioned earlier. In 1st semester all 3 branches have to study together in one classroom. After 1st semester they will be divided in different specializations as below.
1. MTech IT in system --> MLIS, HCI, robotics
2. MTech IT in software and data engg. --> software engg and data engg.
3. Mtech IT in network and security --> WCC , CLIS.
So, everything is the same as previous years. Don't be panic if you are going to take admission in IIITA MTech IT.
Last but not least , I just want to clear that these are just specialisations. During placements, all are treated the same as MTech IT students.
Hope your doubts have been cleared now. Still if you have any queries then you can contact me on Facebook or LinkedIn.
Thank you.

Hello Guys. I want to share my experience as an M.Tech student at IIIT Allahabad. Currently I’ve completed my 2nd semester and I’m writing this post so that you can take an informed decision about choosing IIIT A or any other college for that matter.

This post contains my 1 year of experience of studying at IIIT A. I will be describing my experience in terms of branch, specializations, courses, placement opportunity, internship opportunity, coding culture, quality of teaching, research output of professors, research infrastructure, college facilities like mess, hostel, sports etc., teaching assistant work, thesis work, fees, college administration etc.

At the end, I will also share my opinion on choosing to work after B.E or going for masters.

Disclaimer: The post is based on my experience. I have tried to be as bias free as possible but know that every individual have different experience even when they are in the same college studying the same subjects. So, please do your own research and based on your circumstances, you should take decisions.

1. Various Branches at IIIT A, specialization and courses

We have 4 branches here at IIIT A. Information Technology(IT)(most preferred one), Electronics(EC) and Bio Informatics(BI) and Data Science and Analytics(DSA). First 3 branches use GATE score for admissions while DSA branch has its own exam for admission.

I’m from IT branch and I’ve done my bachelor in mechanical engineering. I had prepared for GATE CS and GO was really helpful in this journey(Thanks GO!). IT branch has further 8 specializations which are offered after 1st semester. You can check about them here

One bad thing about specializations is that every specialization has a minimum and maximum number of seats. Students can select these specializations based on their grades in 1st semester. Hence, if you’re not from top 20-30 of your class then most likely you won’t get your desired specialization. Unfortunately, I’m one of those who didn’t get their first preference for specialization. Now, I’ve to study courses that I don’t have any interest in. Hence if you are aiming to get admission at IIIT A, make sure you score well at least in your 1st semester.

1st semester courses will be common for all IT students and we had following subjects.

  1. Advanced Programming and Data Structure: Most important one from placements perspective.
  2. Programming Practices: Got overview of Linux and implementing few of its commands, Assembly Language, Parallel programming etc.
  3. Maths for IT: Linear Algebra, Probability. Make sure you study them well before joining M.Tech as you won’t get much time to understand advanced concepts.
  4. Research Methodology: Easiest one. Theoretical but important subject if you are aiming for research.

Our 1st semester was completely online. So scoring good marks was very easy for obvious reasons. But I would recommend to study subjects like Advanced Programming and Data Structure seriously as it would help in placements.

In 2nd semester, every specialization has different set of courses. Although many of the courses overlap with other specializations as well. You can find the list of courses offered in each of the specialization here. Note that a large number of courses are listed in that webpage but only a few of them are actually offered depending on the availability of professors that are able to teach those subjects. Most of the time, the elective courses(those that you can choose by yourself) are easy to score but it all depends on the professor teaching that course. If a professor decides to make the evaluations difficult then even the easy-to-score courses will become hard and vice-versa.

2. Placement, Internship Opportunity and Coding culture

M.Tech students(IT, EC, BI) were only allowed for 2 month internship during summer break after the completion of 2nd semester. DSA branch students were allowed for 6 month internships. Very few companies allowed M.Tech students for internships as most of them came for 6 month internships. Also, most of the companies came for SDE roles and very few came for data related roles so DSA students also didn’t had any advantages despite the fact that they can do 6 month long internships.

Although, during placement season, more than enough companies visit college and you can get a good package if your coding skills is good. So, placement wise, college is good but not internship wise. The placement opportunities that you get in a college like IIIT A is it’s biggest plus point.

Also, before taking admission, I had heard that the coding culture is very good here but due to covid it was impacted as seniors couldn’t take offline classes during that time. Although now it is restored and everything is getting back to normal.

3. Quality of teaching, Research output of professors and Research infrastructure

Some professors are really good at teaching.

Some are good at research. Although very few of them publish in high impact journals. This is the case with many reputed Indian universities including IITs as well. Although, research infrastructure is decent as there are many labs which has decent facility and work 24 x 7. But most likely you have to put efforts from your side if you really want to do good research.

4. College facilities: Mess, Hostel, Gym, Sports

We get breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner at mess. Breakfast is good but everything else is average or sometimes below average. There are a number of food stalls, dabbas etc. near the campus and food delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy work at IIIT A but number of options are limited as the college is not located in an urban area.

Regarding hostel, M.Tech 1st year students have to live in a pair but in 2nd year single rooms are allotted. We have 5 boys hostel and 3 girls hostel. Boys hostel also have tennis court.

Gym has a good number of equipments. I’m a fitness person and I can definitely say that gym is quite good here.

We have a ground for various sports like volleyball, football, cricket etc. Facilities for indoor games like snooker, table tennis are also available.

5. Teaching Assistant work & Thesis work

TA work and its load will largely depend on the professor under which you do your TA work. For me and most of my batchmates, this was not hectic.

Again, Thesis work load will also depend on the professor under which you will work and the topic of research that would choose.

6. Fees

In 1st and 2nd semester, fees was around 80k/semester. This is one of the lowest among all IIITs. Although now it is expected to increase as the fees was not increased in last 1.5 years due to covid.

7. College Administration

Many students at IIIT A believe that College Administration is not very supportive. I’m listing down following points on why I also think the same.

1. Lack of coordination in College Administration and poor decision making

Our 1st semester was completely online. In our 2nd semester, we were told in March that it will be on the individual professors to decide whether they want to conduct offline exams or not. Initially our professors wanted to take online exams. But after that, in April our beloved HOD told that everyone is expected to be in campus in 2 weeks. Then after 2 weeks when corona cases were rising and few of students were also found out corona positive then it was announced that there is no need to join the college for the moment and we should refrain from coming.

You can clearly see the mismanagement from their side. Expecting students to come to college in April when the exams and course load are at their peak was not something that one should do.

2. Illogical policies for TA stipend

Our college has a rule that you need to come to office to mark your attendance. It doesn’t matter whether you have some TA work on that day or not, you have to mark attendance every day(MON-FRI) otherwise money will be deducted from your stipend for that day.

This is complete non-sense as every student was doing TA work from home/campus. The attendance has nothing to do whether one is doing it’s TA duties sincerely or not.

That’s all regarding my experience here at IIIT A.

Q. Should I join industry after Bachelor or do Master’s ?

This is a very common question.

If you want to do M.Tech from India only for the sole intention of getting a good job then I would recommend to not apply for M.Tech and join industry right after bachelor. Because, right now the industry is moving towards skills rather than degree and you can learn anything from internet if you are motivated enough. Preparing for product based companies hardly takes 6 months. So you can prepare for PBC while on your job. I’ve seen my hard working friends getting 15-20 LPA after 1 year of joining service based companies. Even those who were working in a chill manner are doing decent as they now have around 7-8 LPA of salary. So doing 2 years of M.Tech and getting the same package of 15-20 LPA is not worth it in my opinion.

But if you are someone who has decided that you want to do research in some field(which you are sure of) then doing master is a good idea. Even then I will suggest you to try doing your master’s abroad. But if you don’t get it then top IITs and research focused institutes like IISC, ISI, CMI, TIFR, DA-IICT, IIIT H are also good.

But most people don’t know what they want to do right after bachelor so the best way according to me is to spend time in industry first. You will at least earn something and meanwhile try to get exposure to other fields by leveraging your network within the company and its past employees. Then after few years you may get clarity on what to do.

First of all congratulation to all apprentice and take few months rest as GATE exam just over. If your exam is not good don’t worry you will have lots of options.

I am M.Tech 1st  year student of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in IIT Guwahati and my B.Tech was in CSE. We are the first batch in Robotics & AI. Lets discuss why I choose and how I am getting benefits from that course as my background was CSE and how it will help in placement. I am also telling that I choose this course dropping all the offers from top nits( Trichy,Warrangle,Surathkal) CSE and IIT BHU CSE, IIT Ropar CSE,AI and my decision was right.

1.Lets first discuss the course content of my SEM-1 .

We have 2 core subjects – Fundamental of Robotics , Artificial Intelligence. and 2 electives- Computer science Maths and Deep learning(I choose) You can choose also NLP,Speech Processing,IOT,Wireless,Linear Algebra. So SEM-1 is fully Computer Science Subjects. You will not get any difficulties in any subjects except Robotics till mid sem, after mid sem last 1 month you will learn new things but that ok, you CSE students will get marks easily I got 9 points in it out of 10.  Even we had 2 labs- Robotics lab and Python lab, both are full of coding. I got 10 in Robotics lab and 9 in python lab.  If you choose NLP or Speech Processing we will get one course project from each and can put it CV for placement.  And electives that I mentioned all are offered by  CSE department and students from CSE and DS take those. So SEM-1 is perfectly ok.

2.Lets talk about SEM-2.

We have 2 core subjects-Robot Vision(take by cse prof. Arijit Sur Sir because 80% syllabus is computer vision) ,Machine Learning. and 3 electives I choose – Reinforcement Learning,Image Processing,Statistical Learning( for Data Science profile in placement). These 3 course is offered by Mehta School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence of IIT Guwahati. Mehta family introduced IIT Roorkee data science and artificial intelligence department also last year.We are getting 4 course projects for placement CV from here. Even you can choose Introduction to Data Science,Soft Computing(90% syllabus is Neural Network), Numerical Analysis(which is Scientific Computing in Data Science course), VLSI(CS 557),Social media and DATA Mining(CS557),Optimization Methods(CS 508-Algorithm course based on graph, DP,NP hard, NP complete). My few batch mate have taken these courses. So if you see all 1st year courses are fully CS related and if you think you will get face difficulties if you come from CSE background then you are wrong, if the people come other than CSE background, then they face difficulties as then are not familiar with coding because all are CSE intelligence subjects.

3.Lets talk about MTP(Final Year project)

My MTP project is related to Computer Vision/Image Processing/ CNN deep neural network, titled : ”Underwater Object Detection and Recognition”. Work will be related to Under Water Computer Vision using Deep Learning.Even if are from CSE or DS then you also have to work mostly related in such topics. So, till now there is no difficulties anyone one will face, I guess.

4.Now important one INTERNSHIP and PLACEMENT

Centre will allow for internship also for 2/3/6 months. Where CSE department in IITG doesn’t allow for internship this year. Those companies who come for CSE and DS also allow us for data science profile in internship. Few of us got internship and mostly will get PPO(Pre Placement Offer). Even in the internship interview they expect that we are from CSE background.

For placement all companies those who come for CSE and DS we can sit with them for SDE and DS role for placement confirmed from our CCD placement office, no particular language barrier is there, you can choose any one among python, java,c++(mostly preferred). Company check your knowledge not background.

So those who are thinking it as Robotics  I can say them you are wrong. The course is fully Artificial Intelligence course.

  • Plus point is department so student friendly, they allow us to choose any cse intelligence related subjects, so in second sem we opted  all 3 electives related to cs and department  opened it for us, which were not even in elective list.

So why I dropped top Nits CSE, simple ,course is fully related to computer science+ I am getting top old IIT brand value(old IIT brand matters)+placement(mind it Google doesn’t come to any NIT).

So if you are getting offer from it don’t reject, accept the offer and enjoy the IIT life. At the end of the day call is yours.(P.S I didn’t apply for any IIIT, coz my family economical condition was not good). IIT Guwahati doesn't participate in last 2 COAP rounds last year. You can apply for the course during M.Tech admission application of IIT Guwahati along with computer science , data science.

I have attached last year closing ranks for this course below in comments.

Sorry for any typos, and grammatical mistakes.

Placement Stat : Edit date-20/12/2022 (100% placed, 1st branch of IITG with full 100% placement of 2022-23 placement season)

Though in bad market condition throughout the world Robotics and AI branch of IITG got 100% placed, with avg CTC 21 LPA and median CTC 19 LPA.

Among the students there are 2 international packages also. Students got placed in Rakuten Japan,HSBC,SLB(Schlumberger),Blend 360,HCL,IBM,Accenture,Flexday,Axtria,Fico,Bhanzu in profile SDE,Data Science,AI/ML.
