Congratulations on the wonderful success that you achieved in GATE 2019. The trend this year is unprecedented, and I see lot many candidates scoring above 60 as compared to previous years.

This post is targeted towards candidates having a GATE score of 600-700. As you might have guessed it, I’ll be talking about IIT-Gn.

Admission Process:

You have to apply through their website. Shortlisted candidates will be called for a Written Test-Coding Test followed by an Interview. The shortlisting usually involves a minimum GATE of 600(they may change it, so can’t guarantee).

Written Test:

This test generally consists of questions from Discrete Maths and Algorithms(these are relatively tough). Some basic questions from OS, DBMS. You have negative marking as well. Marking scheme last year was +2, -1. So avoid guessing, if unsure.

Coding Test:

They are looking for candidates who can code well. This doesn’t mean that you need to be a fantastic coder. Although I would suggest to start coding easy and medium problems on Hackerrank. That should be enough. The coding platform would most likely be Hackerrank.
Hackerrank Sections for practice:

Arrays, Trees, Strings, Greedy. (Try to solve easy and medium level problems.)

Interview:

Interviews are medium to tough, depending on the panel you are alloted in. Most professors at IIT Gn work on theoretical computer science and algorithms. So if you say your favourite subject is Algorithms, be prepared to prove the correctness of your solution.

I would also suggest to conceptualize the properties of Graphs(eg Bipartite-Odd Cycle) as well. Most professors love questions on graphs.

For more details refer to previous blog on IIT-Gn on GO.

Admission process aside, it’s natural to have this question as to why should you consider IIT Gn. This is a new IIT and Computer science discipline started in 2016. M.Tech programme for CS started in 2017. But if you looking for quality research, especially in theoretical computer science, then this is a great place to come. I’ll list some great things about IIT Gn:

  • Most faculties have done their Ph.D from top IITs, IMSc.
  • As mentioned before, it is great for Algorithms. But it is also relatively good for Machine Learning, AI and Computer Vision. We have excellent professors who work on practical as well as theoretical AI.
  • The course structure is quite good. It has flexibility to choose the course that suits your needs.
  • Average placement for CS M.Tech 2017 batch is 13lpa(and it will only improve).
  • We have a top quality campus- “Green campus”  as we call it, with all the required amenities.

IIT Gn focuses on research more, and therefore I feel you won’t be let down by the fact it is a new IIT. Additionally, you will have ample of internship opportunities as well. So if you are inclined towards research(future Ph.D), then I would suggest this as a great option. On the other hand, if you are placement oriented, and you can’t get any old IITs or top NITs, then you should consider this college.

If you have any further queries, you can ask me or @srivivek95 or @Despair Darkness

A thought! when i was in 120 minutes mark ,loadshedding happend and when i reopend again within a minute! all marked answers were lost!
thank GOD! i write down all answers while solving ,in copy and again just marked them in near about 12 minutes..from scratch..but after completion it is showing my time 133 min....means previous 120 is taken in account..ok..but then answers should also come  marked while reopening.

periodic update to db will solve this

ps:my final year project was on an online exam system for entire college, and had to deal with this kinds of issues always!so don't mind for this extra suggestion

I've seen the placement statistics, I just want to know personal opinions. Does anybody here plan to apply there this year? On the website it says in MNNIT there is a separate test for CSE.

Thanks for your time.

IIT-G has just released counseling dates for CS on 17th May.

IIT-B RA interviews are scheduled on same day.

Can we do something regarding this?

Earlier i saw somewhere IITK and IISC CDS dates were clashing.

Why can't IIT's coordinate among themselves while releasing dates?People having rank from 200-400 are already having limited colleges to consider and now from that dates have started to clash.

I dont understand why does IIT-G needs to call candidates for counseling in case they dont have written test for them. Why cant they just issue direct offers as done by IIT-B for TA and document verification can be done later?

Please give some valuable suggestions if something can be done.

Please re-tweet this to ensure some action is taken.

@HRDMinistry @isro @NIELITIndia
There are hardly a few PSU exams for Computer Science and now ISRO and NIELIT are conducting exams on the same day - 17/12/17 and despite many requests from the aspirants both are not willing to change the dates. Please change one of the date.

Hello,

I just wanted to know that when IIT R will release revised answer key after accepting challenges from students?

Will there be any changes in CS GATE 2017 answer key(Set 1 and Set 2)?

After how many days  IISc(GATE 2016 organiser) had uploaded revised answer key for GATE 2016? Was there any change?

The contest portal will be open tomorrow onwards, whoever has given 35 as answer please do contest. A difference of 1 mark can bring huge changes in rank/score. Even if it doesn't get accepted, at least we tried.

Today solving, some of Network Security questions, I came across few complex/ exponential calculations, which forced me to use calculator. Till now, I was using in-bulit OS calculator. But, since GATE is just on 20 days, I thought it’s best time to get used to with GATE virtual calculator. I found exact calc on official Mock test at GATE 2019 website. But, each time switching to new tab, accessing that mock and all those steps….that was quite annoying. So, I thought it would be useful if I could port same calc on each GO question page. It took me around ~2Hrs of coding and I finally made Chrome extension for it. Here’s how it looks:

There’s a ’Show Calc’ button at very top left, just before GO logo.

And after clicking on ’Show Calc’ button:

Due to time constraint, I build very basic extension, just focusing on functionality rather styling and testing for all screen size. To avoid overlapping, I made calculator draggable.

I’ve uploaded code to same ‘Chrome extension for PiP mode for questions’ github repo.

Steps to install Chrome extension:

  1. Go to https://github.com/PiratedVirus/PiP-mode-for-GO-questions
  2. Click on clone/download zip.
  3. Unzip the folder.
  4. Head over to ‘chrome://extensions’ or open extensions page from menu bar and enable developer mode.
  5. Drag and drop unzip folder.
  6. Enjoy :)

If you find any bug, feel free to pull request over github repo.

Hope this helps! :)

This is a discussion blog for all the people appeared in set1.In my little knowledge of GATE for 2 years, this time i found that there was hell and heaven differences among two sets

well we can do nothing about it..except suffering..But in set 1 there was 2 question from Code optimization

1 from Matrix vector

1 from Gaussian probability , a total of 4 questions were OUT OF SYLLABUS

So i need a suggestion, should we mail IIT Roorkee to adress AT LEAST the Out of syllabus questions properly

what do you guys say?

Guys, I joined MS program last year(July 2017).If you have anything to ask about this program, i am willing to help.

It seems that I can't comment so I am adding relevant details here.

Selection criteria : GATE score + written test + interview

Last year GATE score cut-off for MS program was 650(General).For others, I guess it was 600 or lesser(not sure). The selection was solely based on written test and interview after initial GATE score screening. The syllabus for the written test was similar to GATE though the questions were simpler to solve. If you have your basics clear, then it will be a cake-walk.

Don't skip any subject because every subject was covered in the question paper. For right answer +3, otherwise you get -1. Around 300-350 people attempted the test , only 47 cleared. So the competition was real tough. There were 30 questions in total.

For the interview, they will ask you to choose one subject from a list of 9-10 subjects. I chose DS & Algo. They will check whether your concept is clear in that subject. I was asked to prove the bound for BuildHeap operation on board and some questions on arrays and linked lists(don't actually remember). They will also ask some general questions(why you want to go for MS, etc). Finally 21 were selected out of 47(HTRA/ISEA/Project category). If you clear the written test, then you have a pretty good chance of making through.

For MS, you need to do a minimum of 5 courses(depends on guide). You will be given around 2 months time to select your guide by meeting and talking to every faculty in the department. So you can take your time and decide on your research area. From July 2017, the stipulated time for MS has been fixed at 2.5 years(reduced from 3 years, you will get stipend till that period). So, one needs to finish with the course work as early as possible and start with the research.

For research work, it is not mandatory to get your work published.I have heard people say that if your work doesn't get published, you will be stuck and won't get degree. It's a myth. You need to come up with some publishable content which will be reviewed by GTC committee. If your work is published, then the review work is easy, otherwise it will be reviewed by 2 external faculty(other institutes) working in the same area.

Regarding, my background

My GATE score was 735, rank 500. I worked at TATA Consultancy services for 2.5 years before joining here. My research area is Cryptography. If you have any more queries, please feel free to contact me.

Can someone tell me why I can't add any comment.

Edit: (Gen) If you have CGPA 8 or 75% in your B.Tech and  a valid GATE score of 650 or above, then only apply.

If you have any doubt, then inbox me.

I searched throughout the internet and was not able to find a single blog that would provide any information about MTech CS written examination of ISI Kolkata that happened on  18th July, 2021. I have made this blog for starting a discussion about the paper and know what might be the expected cut-off this year.

I attempted MTech CrS, Math section for PCB and was able to solve 4.5 questions out of 10. I did around 20 questions in PCA from which 3-4 I know  are incorrect. People who attempted  this year, how did your exams go and what do you expect from it? Also, what might be the tentative date for results? Also, I have a 2 month notice period in my company so when shall I give my resignation? Do I give my resignation after the results are announced or do I give it right now to avoid any problems? I am not sure about getting selected but just in case if I get selected I am willing to leave my company.

@Arjun Sir, I am a final year student and I am getting 47 marks in gate in ST category. I think, I will be easily able to get the IIT'S , but the actual doubt is: My coding skills is very poor , it is below average because my logical thinking is not good.I have tried several times to improve my coding, but failed So, I want to know, should I join IIT for M.Tech or not ?? Is their any field in CSE M.Tech, which does not involve coding . One more thing, I am not interested in teaching field.Should I quit computer Science field because I lack coding skills required? Please suggest me.

GATE Topper Algorithm

1. Check topics from this document

2. Study Them From Any Standard Textbook, Else Go To Nptel

3. Try a couple of simple questions from end chapters to know if you understand basics of that topic

4. Try GATE previous years related questions

5. If you find some questions in GATE papers not related to the topic you studied, go back to Step 2. ..

Before using the book 1. The books and video lectures mentioned are the best possible sources for the subject and you can choose one of them or as needed.

For doubts regarding books and videos check GATECSE - Books and GATECSE - Video Lectures or better write your query on the.…

2. Types of Problems section has been made after analyzing through many previous year GATE question papers.

It does not guarantee the questions will only come from those mentioned, but gives you an idea how and from questions have been asked. But if you aim high, then please complete full syllabus.…

3. [XYZ] is a short tag for the book mentioned so that we don’t have to write full names of the authors.

So don’t get confused when you see them in the Topics and Chapters table...

Due to demands from other branches we have made score calculators for the below branches active now:

Mechanical

Computer Science

Electronics

Electrical Engineering

Instrumentation

Civil

Chemical

Since there is only one variable for score prediction – the top 0.1% marks and this can be guessed pretty accurately, the predicted score should be at least 98% accurate. Now, the scores are predicted using the marks calculated using official keys (will be changed to the finalized one when they get released).
