A router receives and sends data on computer networks. Routers are sometimes confused with network hubs, modems, or network switches. However, routers can combine the functions of these components, and connect with these devices, to improve Internet access or help create business networks.

A router is typically used in a LAN to separate parts of the LAN into subnet. This is done for various reasons, including for:

1) Security, to be able to limit access to important resources like servers.

2) To separate logically into departments.

3) To separate by location, such as different floors or buildings such as on a campus.

4) To reduce the number of devices on each subnet.
