Assume that host A and host C are connected through intermediate bridge and router labeled B and R respectively. Determine how many times each frame has to visit the network layer, data link layer and physical layer during a transmission from A to C.

  • 1

    Network Layer - 4, Data Link Layer - 4, Physical Layer - 6

  • 2

    Network Layer - 3, Data Link Layer - 5, Physical Layer - 6

  • 3

    Network Layer - 3, Data Link Layer - 3, Physical Layer - 4

  • 4

    Network Layer - 4, Data Link Layer - 4, Physical Layer - 5

Except for Bridge (Layer-2 or DLL Device), every other device is a Layer 3 (NL) Device.

For the intermediate device which is connecting two networks, the packet will pass through two interfaces except for the highest interface it can support.

So, Network Layer - 3, Data Link Layer - 5, Physical Layer - 6.
