Best answer 1 votes 1 votes Wireless MAC protocols can be classified as following: 1)Contention Free 2)Contention Based 3)Hybrid Depending on the channel access mechanisms. Contention Free MAC protocols such as TDMA/FDMA/CDMA based protocols allow each station to access the channel by a predetermined time slot, code sequence or frequency band. The Contention based MAC protocols allow the stations to access the channel randomly when they are ready to transmit. As a result, packet collision is inevitable.
