Opinion regarding imbalance of 2 sets

Hello friends !! Good morning..I was disappointed by whatever happened on the day of exam..I felt that I should write a post regarding this highlighting the issues which I felt to be worth mentioning here .Here are few of those points :

a) Out of syllabus questions : If I remember well then there are 2 out of syllabus questions from Compiler Design(related to code optimisation and code generation which are removed in the 2016 official GATE syllabus itself..Secondly there was a question on something related to vectors in engg maths which is also not there in the syllabus..So these obviously hamper the confidence of a normal student..

b) Lengthy : Some of the 1 mark questions I felt were like 2 marks questions..I mean they are time taking..(This is my personal opinion)..

c) Complex terminologies : Like the one in "birthday attack" question..

In summary hardly 1-2 questions were there in set 1 which I feel is direct..

But contrary to this , set 2 contained many direct questions and easier questions..

According to my previous experience of 2016 and on sincere analysis I did not find this much difference as it is this year.The 2015 papers were also well framed and the sets of 2015 were also well balanced..

According to me , the "out of syllabus" questions in set 1 should be addressed at least by organising committee..

exactly habib... you wrote what i was going to write.... i felt set 1 was like hell... complex..okay,but they cant make set 2 that direct..

@Habib You are right, but the question is, Is there a notion of "Out of Syllabus" in an exam like GATE?? You might be knowing has this ever happened before? I am surely going to challenge the birthday attack question and gaussian Question. Also 1 mark questions like TCP Diagram acc to RFC 793, did you study this ?

That RFC state diagram question of CN also was pretty useless instead that they could ask some numerical or conceptual question on that....

thank God, i thought only i found set 1 difficult. Especially the lenghy issue, i couldnt solve some questions, because of time factor. No question was direct and the time isssue was the worst thing which i felt because that affected the whole mindset of the exam. And yes RFC one, are we supposed to learn all RFC references. This paper sucks really and the whole year preparation has gone invain.

this year set 1 paper was designed like Gate IT previous paper with some illogical and lengthy question.

acc to rule you can not give more than 1 min ques in 1 mark and more than 2 min ques in 2 mark.

and in this paper even in database and programming questions are so lengthy first write on that small book and solve it takes so much time .

even set designer is so much irresponsible that he did not know about the syllabus of gate

when they can organize mechanical branch paper in 2 session means about 1.2 lac people at a time

then why not for all cse people they can't organize the paper in 1 session only (total of 1 lac people)

this time iit professor are so irresponsible that even they can not understand the difficulty level of these 2 paper

what is the mentality behind this to give set 2 paper that much easy

this time iit roorkee is so much irresponsible in designing of paper

we have to raise our voice to arrange paper in 1 session only

My personal opinion- Linear Algebra was really too much complex. I have never seen any complex question on Matrices before starting from 1989 Gate. Matrices was the simplest topic one can crack in Gate ( Eigen Values, Rank, Solutions ). In stressful enviornment cracking those linear algebra question in short time span was difficult. I undersand Gate does not expect you to know and solve only the known problems. Still my personal wish if it would have been a bit easier. Not sure if others experienced were able to solve them.

Yes astha I experienced same issue. After completing one marks questions I found that I was so short of time. It was so stressful. And that RSA one it wasted lot of tym. They could have asked something related to the Algorithm of RSA rather than calculation. C programming was also lengthy. The paper was imbalanced.

I agree with you regarding lengthy paper , the paper had good questions which needed thought but what they dint realize was every good question needs TIME to Think and they just added too many of those . I felt dissapointed more not because of the quality of paper but rather QUALITY V/S TIME factor , It never took enitre 3 hours to solve any of the previous gate papers but for GATE 2017 , even those 3 hours were so damn less. Even some of the direct ones were so bloody lengthy, like one moment  there some 1 mark question of compiler design where we had to find which of the following string is not produced , It took me solid 5-6 mins (to check plus recheck) for a 1 mark .That is too much for a 1 mark question.

Yes 1 mark TOC question  (a+b)*b(a+b) took hell a lot of time for me. First we have to design NFA then convert it to DFA and then minimize that DFA which had like 7 to 8 states.

I think it was not. U could directly make the dfa just by observing the strings.

If the symbol is from LHS you can easily do it ,but the question is Strings whose second Right symbol is "b" then obviously we need to design NFA and then convert it all the way to DFA which was literally alot of headache

For tha DFA question i.e., (a+b)*b(a+b), Here is a good explanation from a Prof from IIT Kgp. He even generalized that For any language containing the string having a 'b' at n^th position from the Right Hand Side requires $2^{n}$ states in a DFA.

there were some ambiguous questions . Deadlock/Starvation one, I'm not sure whether they explicitly stated restarts with same TS

They have stated that it starts with the same Time Stamp.

I've read the question twice to make sure whether that point was specified or not. Because I've done such mistakes last time as well (overlooking the question). That is why I can say for sure, it was mentioned "The process which gets killed, starts with the same Time Stamp". I have no intention in disappointing anyone but that is the truth ;(

I want to share another point with u guys. What a poor arrangement I faced this time. We all know that we had to give test in a specified computer. But how can we check it, if it work properly or not? When I started giving exam , I saw that my mouse is oversensitive. Means if I prssing 5, it is showing 55, or 5555. So, I have to press and delete every time, which unnecessarily taking my time. But when I selecting one option, it is taking two or 3 click to take one option.It is also killing some time.

Not it is only for me , in our classroom, some more people facing problem with computer. One's computer screen showing black for some time.

In that time is there any meaning to ask invigilator to solve this problem, when time going out?

Who is going to take responsibility for it. Where 1 or 2 marks matters to make a huge difference in rank, why these problem we had to face.

I beg to administrative cell , plz donot try to escape ur responsibility every time. And Plz. donot play with our dreams.

I don't know why I studied and practiced so much.They could have said that nothing will come from syllabus we would have slept well for last 2-3 months and given this exam.We might have got more marks...other than few regular questions there was actually no way to prepare for this things.I felt it was more of a presence of mind and negotiating questions test and how people fall into the trap of pressure,make wrong attempts.

The set 1 problems  were very unconventional from the last year papers.And i also find the problems were not framed properly.And the difference between the two sets is an injustice to the students who worked hard for whole year.They should make both sets equivalently tough or easier.I don't think normalization would do much good. Fetching more marks in an easy paper is easier then getting normalized marks in an unconventional paper.

You are exactly right. The whole preparation has gone invain due to this madness and crazy paper setters. I really don't know when we normal aspirants can think and ponder over this injustice why can't these academic people think rationally and logically and then set the paper. And why so much of disparity. If they were so much keen on making crazy paper they should have made both sets equally tough. Sometimes I really think Indian education system is good for nothing and no value if education. All luck and 3 hours lottery to decide our destiny and outcome of our hard work. An average preparation in set2 will fetch more marks than an immense and blood toiling preparation in set1. Education system in abroad in much better. In India what to say about this great education system wow hats off.

when i was given 2016 paper , that time i saw the type of question they have asked then i decided to write gate exam previous year i have written gate without any prep. i was qualified , but this year even after whole year prep. i m not able to qualified not much confident , when i saw the question o thought this paper will be most tough in gate history . that time i got nervous , and i made some mistake in tension also , after that my frnd came out of 2nd set he said me he had got direct question lke degree and vertex is edge given find vertex such easy type question was asked in set2 , i think this imbalance should be avoided and what is the need to make paper in two set , set paper for whole cs student in one shift , ? why need to make set in two shift ? i think it might be some corruption , they take money and allot those student in easier phase student , anyway i m thinking up and uthrakhand has already lean with corruption , investigation team should investigate this type imbalance

We should raise our voice against this imbalance publicly I think. It's not something which should be taken for granted. The worst thing is this disparity. I think this year set2 candidates will only get to top ranks.

think about that all top 100 will be from set2 , then my whole year preparation got wasted , i have feared should i repeat or not if again this will happen then i think i m putting my life in gutter

Even my preparation is all wasted and without any fault we are the sufferers. Why d hell they make 2 sets. What's the mentality behind it. I have lost faith in gate now. Undoubtedly the journey was awesome n I learned a lot but this injustice is really unbearable. Shame on IIT roorkee , bloody careless fraudulent cheaters.

i just feel we didnt get a chance to prove our potential .. and if the exam was just meant to contain questions on three subjects : CO CN and PROGRAMMING , why was the entire syllabus provided then?

I dont think it is at all justified. The brilliance of paper setting would have been proved if the paper contained tricky questions but atleast they ought to be of the syllabus .

Moreover , someone is a great coder is likely to have better chances in securing in this than the ones who studied for entire one year.

I think some organization should definitely pay heed to all the students who have rendered so much turmoil .

@Mallika I disagree with the fact that the paper should contain question from parsing. Should they ask student for paper? Which questions you want in paper? You can't argue on that and should accept the fact that they can set the paper as they like. The point is the difference in set 1 and set 2. If paper is difficult it should be for everyone. If it is easy it should be for everyone. Don't you think if paper will be set accordingly then there is no point in reading the whole syllabus. No one will read Storage memory topic. They will just focus on pagging and round robin and in compiler only parsing.

exactly .. the paper (set 1 ) was difficult for everyone .. and moreover by mentioning parsing i just wanted to lay emphasis on thefact that the entire paper majorly contained  only three subjects which is not justified..

set 2 on the other hnd left scope for students to even try attempting the questions , but set 1 left us with no choice .
