I assume you are in General Category and up to 1500 rank one can expect an interview call for MS Research. With new IITs this might go even lower. One more thing is for research admissions, at many places there might not be a GATE cutoff and based on resume - (CGPA in bachelors etc.) yu might be called as long as you have a valid GATE or other national level score. Even after this 1000s of students won't be getting a good college.

So, what constitute a good college? In my opinion it should increase the knowledge level and hence provide better career opportunities. IITs, select other institutes like TIFR, CMI, ISI, top IIITs are the nly ones in India which does this. Then there are insitutes which prvide good placements and top NITs are the ones to go for. Some professors at NITs do good research and for CSE NIT-Calicut is famous for this. If you get to any of the above colleges your career is safe.

Now comes some colleges which are good for B.Tech.and okay for M.Tech. due to placements. NSIT, DTU, CET Trivandrum, CEG Guindy, mid NITs etc. comes here. If you work "efficiently" - that is doing what is required for companies like Google, Amazon., Microsoft etc. you can get a good placement but there might not be much support from the college. The difference in these colleges and old IITs are that old IITs make you work really hard and hence you will be prepared for a better placement. Here, you have to do this on your own.

Now, below these colleges, at the level of low NITs, I personally do not recommend any one joining. Those people should have definitely written IIIT entrance, BITS entrance etc. Because after M.Tech. you might not even get a good job and you learn nothing. But you can devote time and prepare for GATE again and then get to PSU or other places depending on the work load.

Should I repeat? I have hardly said anyone to repeat. Usually those who successfully do repeat know this from their heirt and hence they do it successfully. If someone forces one to repeat he/she usually won't succeed. The only thing I can guarantee is that those who prepare in the proper way (I have told this in many posts- just browse through the blogs here) hardly fails to get a top rank. But for this, you should know the GATE syllabus well, and must have the commonsense to work for covering them all and not wait for someone to guide you. Whether you have coaching or not, you must guide yourself - can take help from seniors if needed. Then aim for scoring 80+ in the exam. This is possible and if you can do the needed, you can surely repeat.

Hello,

What are your thoughts on new IITs such as IIT Patna, IIT Ropar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Mandi etc. for research. Shall they be considered before NITs if one is interested in research
Like
Don't include IIT Hyderabad in that list, It is on par with IIT G.

Yes, IITH is on par with IITG or might have even gone better. This you can see by checking the placement statistics, JEE cutoffs and faculty profiles.

Regarding new IITs, I have not checked the profile. But usually they take only quality faculties and hence research should be better than in any NIT. But again seeing the faculty page and their publications should give a better idea.

IIITD and B are surely worth joining.

Sir, what are the advantages of choosing NITC over IIITB. Should one prefer flexible course structure or brand value for the long term sir?

NITs

All the NITs are centrally funded government colleges. They offer degrees in almost all the fields of engineering, rather than focusing on one or two fields. They are usually larger in area and have larger no. of students that IIITs, all because the large no. of branches they provide.

Have a slightly higher brand value in general society, as not a lot of people know about IIITs. (But that is not applicable in the professional industry) 50% state quota is applicable in the NIT colleges.

Are declared as Institute of National Importance. College culture is quite vibrant here due to large student mass. ...

IIITs

Now here we have 2 types of IIITs. One which are government and their name starts with “Indian”. And the others are private whose names start with International(IIITH, IIITB, IIIT Bhuvneshwar), and Indraprastha(IIITD).

All the IIITs are primarily focused on IT based courses(CS, IT, ECE, AI).The major difference between the government and private institutes are the Fee Differences and Reservation quotas. The government ones are centrally funded(some fully, and other partially(IIITs built under PPP mode)). They offer degrees only in IT related branches, as the name suggests.

They are usually smaller in Area and have lower no. of students due to the fact that they normally have only 2–4 branches. Their brand value in the eyes of society may be a bit less but in the Tech Industry these institutes are highly reputed.

There is no State quota here in any of the IIITs. They have also been given the status of Institute of National Importance. Coding and development culture is quite vibrant here since the whole colleges are IT focused. Now, as you know the major differences, you can choose the one that fits your need. If you are a person for whom college life is most important, go for NITs. If you just want to get a high package job, both the colleges will work for you.

If you are a person who is interested in computers, IIITs are your ideal college. And if you want to pursue government jobs further in life, its better to go for core branches such as Cse the IIITs are not even in your option, go for NITs.(Or preferably any lower branch in IITs if you can get, the IIT Tag will help you a lot in your interviews).

So this was my opinion about NITs and IIITs. Both are amazing colleges in their own way. Its upon you which college you choose for your own....
